More lights set to bring Christmas cheer to town

Have your say

Christmas spirit could shine brightly in more areas of Spalding town centre this year after a decision was taken to extend the festive lights.

In 2012 thousands of pounds were splashed out on buying new all-white lights to festoon areas of Hall Place and Market Place.

But some areas were left in the dark after the outdated multi-coloured bulbs were binned off.

That could be put right this December with plans for more lights in New Road and a new display at the Market Place end of the Hole in the Wall passage.

Nine more lampposts in New Road will get the light arrangements .

The total cost of the first year installation, take-down and storage of the extra New Road lights is £9,119, with £910 for the Hole in the Wall/Market Place display.

A street feature on Red Lion Street will also be relocated at a cost of £600.

And things could be looking even brighter in 2014, when more lights could go up in Winsover Road.

The big plans to make Spalding Town Centre a twinkling winter wonderland were discussed at a meeting of Spalding Town Forum last week.

The management of the lights was taken over by Spalding Chamber of Commerce last year.

President Phil Scarlett said: “These plans will improve even further on last year’s display, which was well received.”
