A ‘mini orchard’ that produces three different varieties of apple on one tree has been launched by Bakker Spalding.
The trio apple tree, which produces Jonagored, Golden Delicious and Elstar, can be kept in a container when it will grow to around 1.25m making it ideal for patios and balconies, says the company.
If it is planted in the ground it will grow to full size.
Launched at the same time is a trio currant bush which grows to about one metre and which produces red currant ‘Jonkheer van Tets’, black currant ‘Titania’ and white currant ‘White Pearl’.
Adrian Nind, managing director, Bakker Spalding Garden Company, expects the mini orchard to be very popular.
“Our recent study on gardening across Europe showed that 38 per cent of people in the UK would love to grow apples in their garden,” he said.
“Not everybody has the space to grow full-sized fruit trees, which is why we’ve come up with this ‘Mini Orchard’ range with a special trio apple tree and trio currant bush, which will fit perfectly in a container on your balcony, porch or patio – whatever the size of your garden.”
