Long Sutton & District Civic Society events organiser Wendy Jeffries says the British Legion began in Long Sutton soon after the end of the Second World War.

Wendy has a copy of a letter from 1942 from the Long Sutton and District Post-War Fund detailing its ambition to start a fund to provide a “social centre” to cater for the “spiritual, intellectual, physical and recreational needs” of local people, “particularly having in mind the probable needs of the men and women now serving in His Majesty’s Forces, Home Guard and Civil Defence Units”.

The letter asked for contributions to the fund, adding: “We need hardly emphasise the great debt we all owe to all the Services and it is felt that this fund gives everyone an opportunity of expressing appreciation in a practical way.”
