A retired businessman from Long Sutton has seen his life turned upside down after a devastating fire outside his home in the town.

Robert Green (69) said that the fire, which broke out in High Street, Long Sutton, at about 12.15am on Wednesday, has "destroyed my life".

About 40 firefighters from three counties took at least three hours to fight the fire which completely destroyed a garage/shed, two cars, a camper van and other items, the total of which Mr Green valued to be worth at least £60,000.

Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue said the cause of the blaze was "undetermined", while Lincolnshire Police confirmed that a cordon put in place around High Street was only lifted at about 3.30am.

Mr Green said: "I was woken up my neighbour who was knocking on my bedroom window and saying: 'Your shed is on fire'.

"I tried to move one of my cars but the fire was very severe and all I could do was watch my belongings, including my tool shed, go up in flames.

"There were about six different fire crews at the scene, but the fire itself just seemed to go wild.

"I had a Jeep Cherokee and a camper van, while my partner had a Citreon.

"But you won't recognise them now because they're just grey shells."

Mr Green revealed that it was the second time he had been affected by a fire after a carpet business he used to run in Sutton Bridge went up in flames at least 25 years ago.

He said: "I'm trying to get my head sorted out after this latest fire because I don't know where I am at the moment.

"I really didn't need this right now and my partner is shaken up about it as well.

"The Citreon was her pride and joy so neither of us know where we are right now.

"I've got to make a lot of phone calls about my car and the camper van as well which have both been totally destroyed.

"Fortunately, I do have surveillance cameras which store pictures for 30 days so I'm sure one of them will be able to point out where the fire started.

"I'm expecting the fire people to come down again, but this has destroyed my life."

A Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue spokesman said: "We sent appliances from Holbeach, Long Sutton and Spalding, as well as a Command Support Unit team from Market Rasen.

A Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue spokesman said: "We sent appliances from Holbeach, Long Sutton and Spalding, as well as a Command Support Unit team from Market Rasen.

"However, due to the geographical location, there were further appliances sent from Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, as well as Terrington and West Walton, Norfolk.

"The fire caused serious damage to one detached garage and three cars and moderate damage to an adjoining living area that had been converted from a mobile home.

"Crews wearing four sets of breathing apparatus extinguished the fire using three main water jets and two water hose reels.

"A fire investigation has been carried out and the cause remains undetermined due to the damage.

"However, no casualties were reported."
