LETTER: 70 years of peace because of the EU
Anyone who’s watched Simon Reeve’s travelogue series about Vietnam will realise how hugely lucky we, in the UK, are to have experienced 70 years of peace since the end of the Second World War.
Some people may try to convince you that over 70 years’ peace in Europe is due to our membership of NATO.
However, don’t believe them. I can tell you, from personal experience, that NATO would never have held together had the EU not been created, knitting together, as it does, the economies of Europe and encouraging the major powers in Europe to work together on supranational issues, like climate change and global tax avoidance, which cannot be solved by any one nation on its own.
The EU has already proven to be the greatest ever contribution to peace in the world, and we need to work collectively to preserve and improve it.
