Have your say

It’s official – you are helping to save Christmas for the elderly and residents who might otherwise have been spending the day alone.

Since the Spalding Guardian appealed for help to organise a Christmas Day meal, enough expressions of interest and volunteers have come forward for us to make an official booking at the Ivo Day Centre in Spalding.

Valerie Waller, of Long Sutton, has been learning how to make decorative icing for two years and is kindly offering to donate a Christmas cake to the feast.

Mrs Waller, of Barnsgate Road, said: “I’ve been going to icing classes with Fay Barrett in Moulton Seas End for two years, but this is the first year I’ve made Christmas cakes entirely on my own.

“One of them is quite large and when I saw the article in the Spalding Guardian I thought it would be perfect for the Christmas meal.

“I’m really pleased with it and even my husband says it looks lovely so I hope everyone enjoys it.”

Our reporter Kat Wakefield has offered to bake mince pies and local butcher Gary Simpson has offered to contribute to the main meal.

A lady from Weston Hills is one of our first bookings for the meal.

She said: “I’d otherwise have been on my own but I do have a car and would be happy to pick someone up on the way.”

Coun Gary Taylor, who represents the Castle Ward, has also offered his support.

He said: “Christmas is an exciting time of the year for families and children, but we must not forget those whose relatives have moved away and may be alone.

“For them it can be very depressing if it seems they have nothing to look forward to.

“It’s excellent that volunteers have come forward at short notice to organise this meal.”

Liz Walmsley, gerneral manager of Spalding Age UK, said: “It is very heart warming to know that our local residents have got together to make the Christmas Day lunch happen.

“It will mean so much to our lonely elderly people who otherwise would be on their own at this special time of year.

“Well done to you all.”
