Council leader's congratulations for South Holland MP's knighthood
South Holland District Council leader Gary Porter has congratulated MP John Hayes on his "long overdue knighthood".
As we reported online on Friday, the MP's honour was announced from Downing Street on Friday afternoon.
Coun Porter said: "I’m sure I speak for many South Holland residents, when I congratulate John Hayes on getting his long overdue knighthood.
"As every resident knows John has been our champion in Parliament for more than 20 years.
"During this time he has worked on many local issues and has supported the council in its efforts to bring in millions of pounds of central government funding. He has also held numerous shadow and Government positions where he has worked on behalf of the whole country, not just for South Holland.
"Some of us expected his recognition to come earlier in the year, but, in time for Christmas is just as good as in time for the New Year celebrations, the main point is it’s finally arrived."
Sir John was a Tory front bencher for 19 of his 21 years in Parliament and served as a Government minister in six departments.
An ardent Brexiteer, the MP says the knighthood won't change his views and he cannot support key points of Prime Minister Theresa May's Brexit deal.
