Donington man sleeps out in Spalding to raise money for a good cause
A Donington man experienced what life is like for homeless people, in order to raise money for a good cause.
John Stephenson (45) spent a cold night sleeping rough behind the Castle Sports Complex in Spalding on Friday last week.
He had taken on this 24-hour homeless challenge in order to raise money for Cancer Research and his efforts resulted in £20 in donations.
Mr Stephenson said he was pleased to do his bit to help the charity.
He said: “Sleeping rough made me feel very grateful for what I have.
“I wouldn’t say it was frightening but it was a very odd feeling. I felt very isolated. It was a very strange experience. I am pleased that I am not homeless for real.
“I had just a sleeping bag along with water to keep myself hydrated and a couple of chocolate bars.
“But I would rather spend the night in the cold to help people who have got cancer.”
And Mr Stephenson’s fundraising efforts did not stop there as he had also raised a further £40 for Woodgreen Animal Shelter, which has a charity shop in Spalding.
He had raised the money for this charity by selling off Team Stephenson Merchandise over the internet.
Mr Stephenson had previously been awarded a belt by sporting association, Real Impact Boxing Association earlier this year. The belt had been presented to Mr Stephenson to recognise his work during lockdown.
Mr Stephenson has inspired others to get in shape by sharing his regular videos throughout lockdown.
These videos had helped to boost morale for numerous people across the globe and also built up a bit of a social media fanbase for Mr Stephenson.
Not only had he brought a smile to people’s faces but he has also been helping people by providing a listening ear.
Mr Stephenson, who enjoys mixed martial arts, said: “I started off with exercises to get myself in shape and because people were stuck in during lockdown last summer I shared them.
“I have had messages after messages from people who are saying that I have inspired them. They say what you are doing is fantastic.”
