John Sanderson, who lives on the site of the old George Inn at Moulton, submitted this photograph of his grandfather William Hipworth (second from right) at what was believed to be the last sheep market in Sheepmarket, Spalding.
John says his grandfather bought the George Inn, which was pulled down about 60 years ago, so that he could trade as a butcher out of an adjoining shop. As well as the butcher’s shop, John says there was a salting house, for salt pigs, and a chaff house used for cutting up barley straw to feed horses, and stables, all attached to the inn.
John, who refers to it as “Mr Kingston’s sale”, believes this may have been the final sheep market held in Sheepmarket, Spalding, before it was transferred to the cattle market on what is now the town’s bus station.
He would be interested to know if this is indeed the final sheep market and what year it was held. John wonders if anyone recognises other people on the photograph.
