Police have issued advice concerning comments on social media over the weekend about chalk marks on gate posts in Donington, with many people suggesting the marks are used by burglars or dog-thieves to identify suitable target properties.

Community Inspector Jim Tyner said there had been no reported dog thefts in the area. He added: ‘“This is an urban myth that regularly pops up.

“Please be careful when reading such info on social media sites as myths and rumours can quickly get out of hand and cause unnecessary fear for vulnerable members of the community.”
