Long-established Spalding shop Bookmark is up for sale.

Owner Christine Hanson has confirmed that the store is officially in the hands of agents as of last Friday.

Christine said: “I will only sell as an ongoing concern, no disruption will be caused.”

Owner of The Crescent book shop for 24 years, Christine feels that it’s time to reduce her responsibilities and semi-retire. Her recent decision is down to creating a better balance between working life and family life.

She has owned Bookmark since 1991 and its attached cafe has become a meeting place for the local community. It is also renowned for attracting a long list of celebrities over the years for the launching of their books, with TV presenter Judy Finnigan the latest to appear in July.

Now Christine is hoping to gain interest from someone who will not convert the store, but improve it with innovative ideas.

She believes the store will benefit by involving someone who has more technical ability: “I want someone to come in with energy and enthusiasm to keep it going, then I can take a behind the scenes role.”

After working seven-days-a-week at Bookmark, she hopes the buyer will keep the essence of the store as a place for like-minded people to come together. She said: “If there is no interest in the store then I will keep it going. The doors will not be closed.”

Christine believes the most important thing is to assure the security of staff jobs and reinforce that Bookmark will remain open for their loyal customers.

She said: “We have good staff who interact with our loyal customers. It’s one of the few places where customers interact with staff and they become involved in their lives.

“Walking away from this store will be one of the saddest days of my life.

“I wanted a family store and I’m happy to say that’s what I’ve achieved.”
