A retired TV and radio gardening personality – facing the heartbreak of watching her elderly husband with Alzheimer’s disease deteriorate even further after suffering a stroke – is now attempting to dig her way out of a financial hole that she claims has been left by a NHS admin glitch.
Daphne Ledward applied for help towards the £895-a-week cost of care for her husband, John (82), at Wood Grange Care Home in Bourne, in November, when he was transferred there after being a stay in Pilgrigrim Hospital following a stroke.
John had sold a field which meant were above the £23,000 theshold and he would have to pay the bulk of the cost. Daphne applied to NHS Continuing Care for help and believed she was receiving a subsidy of £110-a-week.
However, it was not until recently she realised the application had not been processed and no money had been received. Daphne said: “Continuing Care told me they needed more information and had contacted Pilgrim Hospital. Because the hospital was unable to help, the case was closed.
“I was told I could re-apply but the money would not be backdated. They should have written to John or me instead of leaving us in the dark and closing the case.
“Meanwhile, his savings are whittling away and are way below the threshold now.
“Wood Grange is such a wonderful place, I don’t want to have to move him to somewhere cheaper.”
The couple have been together since the 1980s and lived together in Seas End Road, Surfleet. They met when they both worked at the BBC, John as an audio engineer. Daphne said: “John is in a very poor way. It’s hard enough seeing someone you have loved and respected for such a long time become someone you don’t know anymore.
“To have all of this aggro on top is appalling. John would be devastated if he could understand what was going on.”
“It’s a lesson for people to live life to the full now and not worry about holding on to savings, because then they will have to help you.”
