Sam Todd, of Bourne, submitted this image of a Hospital Sunday parade in Holbeach in the mid-1930s.
Sam – who was in the band somewhere aged about 13 – says the photograph was taken by Dr Walker from his surgery.
Sam writes: “Hospital Sunday was celebrated once a year, with collections for the benefit of hospitals generally.
“The parade would finish at Carter’s Park, where shows, such as gymnastics, would entertain.
“More money would be collected (mainly coppers) thrown into a blanket as it went round the inside of the boundary rope.”
Sam says the Holbeach band is leading the parade and recognises (left to right) Mr Westmoreland, the headmaster of Moulton Grammar School, the second person is unknown, then Mr Harry Mashford, “a well-known barber and celebrity” with a shop in Albert Street, and Mr Bert Wooten, chauffeur to Mr H P Carter at Stukeley Hall (a well-known beneficiary in Holbeach).
Sam remembers that Kirton Gymnastic Club entertained at the end of that year’s parade.
