Holbeach United pays tribute to club legend Peter Cousins
Players and fans paid homage to a legendary supporter as he made his final lap around the pitch.
Peter Cousins (92) made his last visit to Carter’s Park as the Holbeach United community turned out to clap him.
Mr Cousins, who passed away on June 12, began supporting the club as a teenager after recovering from a farming accident and was so dedicated that in later years he volunteered to help behind the scenes.
On Wednesday evening, a hearse containing his coffin drove around the pitch and passed the stand which has been named in his honour.
His son Clive said: “It makes us proud and he would have been so humbled by it.
“He liked to give something back to the club that he had so supported for so many years and that was his way of saying ‘thank you’.
“He was passionate about Holbeach United.”
Mr Cousins was born in Gorefield, near Wisbech, and moved to Whaplode when he was four.
He was educated at Whaplode School before moving onto Holbeach Boys School.
Mr Cousins left school when he was 14-and-a-half years old and began to work on a local farm with the shire horses.
But not long after leaving school, Mr Cousins had an accident when he was run over by a cart and left seriously injured.
Clive said: “He broke his pelvis and spent several weeks in hospital.
“He never lost his love for horses. He was always fond of horses and if he saw one about he would go over to speak to them.”
But not long after this accident, Mr Cousins was introduced to another passion - the tigers.
Clive said: “Someone took him to a Holbeach football club when he was 15. It continued until a week before he died.”
Mr Cousins went onto learn how to drive a tractor shortly after the Second World War and carried on farming until he retired at the age of 65.
Agriculture played an important part in Mr Cousins’ life and he also had a small holding.
Mr Cousins married Cora in 1951 and the couple went on to have three children, Melvyn, Clive and Susan. Sadly Melvyn died at the age of five in 1959 and Cora passed away in 2015.
Mr Cousins has three grandchildren.
