UPDATE: Friday, 4.45pm - A WORKMAN was airlifted to hospital after being injured in a trench in the road.
Lincolnshire Police and Lincolnshire County Council say a trench in Fleet Street, Holbeach, collapsed.
Investigations are under way into what happened.
A Lincolnshire Police spokeswoman said: “Emergency services were called to Fleet Street in Holbeach at 2.15pm this afternoon (Friday) after a trench collapsed in the road injuring a workman who was working there.
“The 43-year-old man was flown to Boston Pilgrim Hospital by air ambulance with a suspected broken leg.
“The Health and Safety Executive has been informed and are attending the scene.”
The victim - thought to be working for a Lincolnshire County Council sub-contractor - suffered a broken leg and was flown to Boston’s Pilgrim Hospital by air ambulance.
Eyewitness Patrick Limming, of J W Limming Ltd in Fleet Street, said: “He appeared to be in a lot of pain but was conscious.”
Lincolnshire County Council area highways manager Jonathan Pearson said: “The road is currently closed after a workman is believed to have broken his leg following the collapse of a trench.
“An investigation is taking place to establish the circumstances of what happened.
“The Health and Safety Executive has been informed, as is usual practice.”
The air ambulance made its landing on the playing field at Holbeach Community Centre in Fishpond Lane.
Fleet Street is closed and is likely to remain so for some time until the investigation is complete.
UPDATE: Friday, 3.45pm - A WORKMAN has been airlifted to hospital apparently after being hit by a digger bucket.
At first it was reported that a trench in Fleet Street, Holbeach, had collapsed.
But an eyewitness believes the victim may have been injured by machinery.
Patrick Limming, of J W Limming Ltd in Fleet Street, said: “From what we understand a worker in the trench got hit by the digger bucket.
“He appeared to be in a lot of pain but was conscious.”
Friday, 2.45pm: A TRENCH in a Holbeach road is believed to have collapsed, injuring a workman.
The incident at about 2.15pm happened in Fleet Street.
The road has been closed and is likely to remain so for some time.
The Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance is on the scene. It’s believed that the worker may have suffered a broken leg.
Police say the extended road closure is because health and safety officials will be investigating the incident.
The Lincolnshire Free Press reported on Tuesday that Anglian Water work to ease occasional flooding of the road near Holbeach Heating started on Monday.
