COUNCILLORS in Holbeach say they have been “inundated” with phone calls about what is going on at the parish council.

However, following weeks of rumours circulating about the future of the town’s clerk, the situation is still shrouded in mystery.

At Holbeach Parish Council’s meeting on Monday, chairman Coun Terry Harrington made a short statement reassuring that parishioners will still be able to get in touch.

He said Jill Harrington had been reinstated as joint clerk at the authority and the parish office was still open three days a week, Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Clerk Granville Hawkes did not attend the meeting.

It is unknown whether there is an issue under investigation or if Mr Hawkes is still working with the authority.

Speaking as the parish meeting opened, Coun Harrington said: “We have been inundated with telephone calls regarding the situation but as far as I am concerned, all we can say is at the moment the parish council is continuing as it always has done.

“It (the office) is open three days a week, the hours are still the same and Jill has, by the members, been reinstated as joint clerk.

“It’s not what I am prepared to say but is all we can say as an authority.”

Previously, councillors have denied Mr Hawkes had been sacked, a rumour in the town, but did not wish to comment further.
