A CARE home provider has called for better awareness of the needs of people living with dementia.
The Order of St John Care Trust, which runs Spalding’s Southfield House, is supporting Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Awareness Week this week.
The campaign encourages people to help those living with dementia feel valued and keep their independence, and the trust’s 16 Lincolnshire homes have laid on a treat week for residents.
Richard Durance, Lincolnshire County Director, said: “We have implemented a series of initiatives that focus on the individual. As well as reminiscence sessions, things like Life Story work and specially designed themed rooms and gardens are key to the ongoing development of person-centred care.”
The charity has also reduced prescription of anti-psychotic drugs to residents with dementia by two-thirds, using creative activities instead.
