DEMOLITION of Spalding’s Welland Hospital began on Monday as a bulldozer began reducing the main building to rubble.

The hospital has been targeted by thieves, vandals and arsonists since it closed to patients in the summer of 2009. Much of the equipment left by NHS staff was flung out of the windows by vandals and people in neighbouring homes have been disturbed by smoke from fires drifting over their properties.

The building has also been a refuge for homeless people.

Owner United Lincolnshire Hospitals Trust was due to begin demolition last month but the project was delayed until this week and is due to finish on November 4.
