Spalding chip shop is channelling Roald Dahl's Willy Wonka by giving away prizes to golden ticket holders
Owners of a popular Spalding chip shop will be channelling the spirit of Willy Wonka by giving away five golden tickets.
Eric and Joell Fragale will be raising money for Leukaemia Research at Domenic’s Traditional Fish and Chips by supporting National Chocolate Week, which runs from Wednesday next week.
The couple, who have returned to the Little London chip shop after a 12 year break, will be giving away a free Fry’s Chocolate to every customer who spends £5.
But five lucky customers will win free fish and chip suppers if they find the golden ticket in a Fry’s selection box - which is reminiscent of the plot of Roald Dahl’s classic story Charlie and the Chocolate factory.
In 1847 the Fry family created the first mass produced chocolate bar which was followed by Fry’s Chocolate Cream which is still enjoyed today.
Eric felt it was appropriate to use Fry’s chocolates and is hoping it will be a boost for people’s spirits during this period.
“We just wanted to do something to try and give people a little lift in these difficult, uncertain times,” said Eric, “it was my wife who actually came up with the idea.
“We just thought, well, who doesn’t love chocolate and Britain’s greatest creations - fish and chips? And of course, Fry’s were the first bars of chocolate made, and we’re fryers, so it all just seemed to fit!”
Eric and Joell first took over the shop in the early 1990s and have made significant changes since returning to Domenic’s in the summer.
Eric and Jo refitted and reopened the shop at the start of July and are currently frying up fish and chips on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
Although they love being back behind the counter Eric is hopeful that he can eventually find someone else to take over the running of the business.
“It’s great for us to be back after such a long time away.
“I’d love to see someone younger come along and take over – we’ve had some interest to turn the shop into other kinds of takeaways, but to be honest, from the feedback we get from the local community, there’s a real demand for a fish and chip shop.
“If the right people come along there’s a real scope to develop the business we’ve built up.”
The couple will be selling Fry’s selection boxes at the cost of £2 with all the proceeds going to Leukaemia Research.
Five of these boxes will be contain golden tickets which will entail the winners to fish and chip suppers.
National Chocolate Week runs until Tuesday, October 20.
