Spalding councillor stands down from cabinet to pursue fire role
A leading councillor has stepped down from his cabinet post so that he can pursue his career in the fire service.
Coun Harry Drury is no longer a cabinet member for South Holland District Council – but remains a ward member for Spalding St Mary’s.
Coun Drury was portfolio holder for commercialisation and growth and said ‘time constraints’ made it tough to juggle his responsibilities with the fire service and council work.
He said: “In a position like that you want to be able to do it to the best of your abilities.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed my position. I have had a huge amount to do with issuing and distributing grants that have been sent by central government during the pandemic. It has been something that, obviously, none of us were expecting. It has been extremely challenging and I have felt for our businesses.”
Coun Drury will be replaced on the cabinet by Jim Astill.
At Tuesday’s cabinet meeting, leader Gary Porter said: “I am content that the community benefits from having Harry as a fireman but the cabinet was starting to suffer from having a hole.”
