The latest from our girl about town
Angel grumbled recently about the wording used by a well-known shop giving away catalogues in a way that seemed a little brusque. When she passed the shop the other day Angel noticed the wording has now changed to a far more polite, ‘Pick up a copy today’. Let’s hear it for polite, grammatically correct signs everywhere. Don’t get me started on apostrophes.
* Angel was reminded again the other day of how fortunate we are to have the fabulous resource of South Holland Centre in Spalding. She’s not normally such a culture vulture, but it was her third visit in as many days to take in two good films and a concert by Ruby Turner.
* Angel’s nephew is very excited about the announcement that the pop group Madness – big when Angel was little (!) – are playing an outdoor concert in Lincoln this May. Wouldn’t it be fabulous if, in two years’ time, we could mark the 50th anniversary of our own Barbecue 67 event with Hendrix et al by putting on another big concert in Spalding?
* The editor’s little girl was quite keen to get out of running in the schools’ cross country tournament at Spalding Grammar School on Tuesday (see pictures on centre pages). Firstly, she announced that she had a cold and a sore throat. Then she forgot to change into her running gear before leaving the house, meaning a quick about-turn. And when the team pictures arrived on the editor’s desk yesterday he noticed she was still wearing her coat. Perhaps she did have a cold after all...
* Spare a thought for the manager of Spalding United’s football opponents Brigg Town on Tuesday night. He turned up an hour before kick-off to be told he was sacked!
