Spalding man Martin to stand for Greens if there's a General Election
South Lincolnshire Green Party has prepared for what is says is an almost-certain General Election before the end of the year by selecting Martin Blake as its parliamentary candidate for South Holland and the Deepings.
Martin is active in a number of local community groups, is a former Cambridge City councillor and has previously stood as a candidate in local elections in Spalding.
Speaking after his selection, Martin said: "I’m honoured to be representing the Green Party in what feels as if it will be an election for the soul of this country. Nevertheless, our national concerns pale into insignificance compared to the global threat of climate change.
"We only have until 2030 to radically change the way we do business, but politicians across much of the world prefer to bury their head in the sand. The Green Party is advocating practical solutions which would also help to heal the social and economic divisions in this country, what we call a Green New Deal, but we’re running out of time."
Martin also advocates a new referendum before a final decision is made about leaving the EU. "It’s been over three years since the country voted to leave, and we’re all a lot better informed now about the likely consequences. Before we take such a monumental step, the most democratic way forward is to ask the people of the United Kingdom if they’re being offered what they voted for."
