Pearl and Ruby in Spalding share how to get your garden summer ready

More news, no ads

First of all we want to say how great it is to be opening our doors once again and to welcome our lovely customers.

This month we have decided to focus our craft column on getting your garden summer-ready with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint.

It is extremely easy to add beautiful touches of colour to complement your plants and flowers and make your outside space look more cheerful.

These are quick and easy projects to try and we have decided to cover ideas which you can get the children involved in.

Annie Sloan Chalk Paint is suitable for children to use as it is non-toxic, doesn’t have any strong odours and is certified as toy safe.

Our first project to have a go at is painting those boring, aged plant pots. You can choose as bright or a subtle as you like.

We have created a more ‘grown up’ example in Annie Sloan Antoinette (pale pink) with a bird transfer. And then we have let the kids loose to create their own!

They came up with a post box using Emperor’s Silk (a rich red) and a nautical theme using Greek Blue.

You can be as creative as you wish by using stencils, stamps or different paint effects.

It really is as simple as opening your tin, dipping in your brush and off you go...

The paint will dry and ‘cure’. Terracotta pots will naturally weather in time but you could add clear lacquer for added protection if you wish.

We have also painted some spatulas in bright colours to use as plant markers for vegetables we are growing at home. You can use a stick of chalk to write the plant names.

A lot of children have missed out on their sports day this year, so we decided to paint our own wooden spoons in chalk paint (Duck Egg Blue, Giverny & Old White) ready for our own egg and spoon races! Cheap and easy summer fun!

And last but not least, we have transformed some old wooden chairs into garden planters by sawing a hole in the seat for the plant pot to sit into and painting up the chair.

We have opted for English Yellow which is nice and bright.

These look lovely dotted around gardens or even by your front door or gate.

• We stock Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in 120ml and one litre tins.
