Fundraiser’s tank appeal

A VETERANS’ champion wants to say “tanks” to local heroes by buying an old military vehicle to use as a showpiece at fundraising events.

Harold Payne, of the Anglia Motel, Fleet, has worked for many years to raise funds to send servicemen and children to visit war graves in Arnham, Normandy and Dunkirk, but in recent years numbers have dwindled and he has turned his attention to supporting those involved in more recent conflicts.

Last year he gave the largest donation from one source to the Royal Anglian Regiment Benevolent Fund, which supports local soldiers.

Now some of the Second World War veterans he works with have come up with the idea of buying a military vehicle which they could take along to supermarkets and other venues where they hold fundraising events to attract attention and hopefully encourage donations for the good cause.

Mr Payne said: “We would like to raise £15,000 for the initial cost of the vehicle. Thankfully, sponsorship for running the vehicle has already been arranged.”

Anyone who wishes to make a donation can make cheques payable to Anglia Heroes and Veterans Fund and send to Fund Treasurer, c/o Anglia Motel and Cafe, A17 Washway Road, Fleet Hargate, Spalding, Lincs PE12 8LT, telephone 01406 422766.
