Seven are riding for Riley
A team of seven cyclists is taking on a 200-mile charity ride this weekend hoping to raise enough money to send a young boy battling a cancerous brain tumour on a dream holiday.
The bravery of ten-year-old Riley Watts, from Sutton Bridge, inspired Connor Leighton, Liam Burton, Adam Fitch, James Barnes, Ivan Ingham, Keenan Hall and Matthew Garrod to come up with the epic fundraiser, which involves them riding from the Severn Bridge, in Wales, back to Sutton Bridge – all in 24 hours.
So far, they have secured around £500 in sponsorship, but are desperately trying to get that up to £4,000, so they can send Riley and his family on a dream trip, while any remaining funds will be donated to Macmillan Cancer Support’s King’s Lynn branch.
Ivan, one of the cycling team, said: “We’ve been training hard for the past four months, taking time off work and even riding during our holidays.
“The event is really close now and we want to raise enough money to send Riley and his family away on holiday so that they can spend some precious time together and enjoy themselves.
“Whatever anyone can give – even if it’s just a pound – will be greatly appreciated, we’re just asking everyone to dig deep for us and Riley.”
“We’d also like to say a special thank Tears, of Sutton Bridge, for donating a hire car to get everyone over to Wales and Statech for supplying a van so we can transport our bikes.”
Riley has been in and out of hospital during the past year due to chemotherapy treatment and a series of infections which have laid him low.
The youngster – who has siblings Jessica (20), Brandon (11) and Owen (7) - recently underwent his last round of chemotherapy and is now waiting for his results.
The Ride for Riley cyclists know his dad Shane through his links with football and decided that since he has given so much to the community it was time somebody did something for him and Riley’s mum, Emma Kelly.
The cyclists will be greeted back at the Anchor pub, in Sutton Bridge, which is hosting a special Casino & Cocktails from 8pm, including a raffle, with all proceeds going to the Ride for Riley Fund.
