Earlier in the school year nearly fifty years 8 and 9 students from Thomas Cowley High School, Donington, signed up to have pen friends from students the Collège La Garriguette, Vergèze, near Nimes in the south of France. It was promised that they would meet up eventually.

Concequently, last term, 49 students accompanied by organising teacher, Madam Houdret and three other of their teachers came to visit the Thomas Cowley High School.

Sadly the visit was only short but students had the chance to meet their penfriend and try out some of their lessons.

Some of the French students, together with their English penfriends, had a cookery lesson with Mrs Jenney, baking the scones which were to be served during the afternoon tea party. The afternoon tea was a great success with the students getting to know each other.

Thomas Cowley French teacher, Mrs Jones, who made the initial contact and organised the visit with Madam Houdret, said: “This has been a fabulous opportunity for both the French and English pupils involved and has helped to bring learning a language to life.

“Many of them have been in regular contact since meeting their penfriends, and we are now in the process of organising an exchange between the two schools.”
