When it came to researching The Chant, a gripping story about a dangerous relationship, Carl Mason had useful contacts from his years in the legal profession to assist him.
What he didn’t have though was first-hand knowledge of a brothel. So he did what any writer worth his salt would do and set about researching that too.
While he has been able to thank the criminal lawyer and doctor who helped with the story line, Carl says: “I cannot thank the local madam who I had the guts to ask for a session – making it clear all I would do was write and all she would do was talk – because, like the agents I initially approached, she did not respond to my plea.”
In the end, encouraged by his office secretaries to take a no holds barred approach, he simply used his imagination.
