As the unseasonably warm December continues and meteorologists talk about Christmas weather records being broken, something very unusual has happened in Holbeach too.

Although it is normal every few years for a few of the early-flowering Narcissus Spring Dawn daffodils to show their heads at Taylors Bulbs’ fields in Holbeach, this year there are a whole field of them already.

This picture was taken yesterday (Wednesday) and shows the flowers in full bloom at Washway House Farm.

Director Adam Taylor said: “Although it is normal for us to see the first flowers in December approximately one year in every three, the warm weather has accelerated the growth and there are many more than we would usually see.

“The growing habit of this early narcissus is often to show a single flower per bulb at first with more flowers coming over a long period of time as the weather warms but we are clearly ahead of a normal growth pattern.”

Taylors will not be cutting daffodils for some weeks yet but are supplying a lot of cut daffodils to UK retailers from their glasshouses.
