A Spalding baker is branching out by extending her range of yummy treats to include pup-cakes – especially for man’s best friend.

Emily Wadsworth, who runs The Cakery, has been baking dog treats for a while but has now decided to set up a pet bakery after some encouragement from friends.

As well as bespoke birthday and celebration cakes, the Canine Cupcake Kitchen at The Cakery will also offer individual cupcakes and biscuits, all made from natural ingredients and dog-friendly chocolate.

“I’ve been making dog treats, biscuits in particular, for a little while now,” Emily explains.

“I had a stand at a dog show, so thought it would be good to do something for dogs and they went quite well, so I’ve been selling them at other events too.

“They’re all made with natural products, are sugar free, low in salt and dairy free - people seem to be more careful about what they give their dogs than their children!”

The idea to launch her new venture alongside her existing business came about after Emily chatted to Marlene Aspden, who runs Highfield Kennels, in Pinchbeck, and Bev Chamberlain, of Central German Shepherd Rescue, at a recent show.

“We were talking about the treats, and just started throwing a few more ideas around - Marlene asked if I’d thought about doing celebration cakes and cupcakes, as she thought they would be really popular,” Emily adds.

“I’ve been playing round with some recipes, based on a liver cake one, and our dog Minty has been a very willing taster – they seem to be going down a storm!”

Having secured the necessary Environmental Health paperwork, Emily intends to bake her doggy treats on separate days from those for her human customers.

She will be showcasing her new range at the market in Spalding on November 30, alongside her Christmas ranges.

Since launching The Cakery 18 months ago following the birth of her daughter, the mum-of-two has been inundated with orders for her tasty treats. She regularly attends Boston’s craft market and one at the Anglia Motel, Fleet, once a month and leads cake decorating classes at The Barns, in Long Sutton.

If successful Emily has also pledged to donate £1 from the sale of each large pet celebration cake to Central German Shepherd Rescue.
