Folk in Spalding and surrounding area

Have your say

A regular column by Spalding Folk Club’s Martin Browne.

The folk festival season is now well under way and we have already been to Ely a couple of weekends ago.

It was our first taste of being stewards and an enjoyable and rewarding experience it was too. We had the chance of seeing some previous guests at Spalding Folk Club including Hannah Sanders and the amazingly talented Luke Jackson as well as getting a preview of the club’s next guests: Artisan. Judging by their performance we are in for a treat on August 5. It was also great to see Damien Barber – previously a Spalding guest with Mike Wilson – with his energetic and exciting mix of music and dance in the form of the Demon Barbers XL.

By the time this article goes to press we will have just got back home from four days at Warwick Folk Festival where we hope to catch a glimpse, among others, of The Young’uns, Billy Bragg, the incomparably funny Les Barker and, of course, Sleaford’s Winter Wilson.

Warwick is a favourite of ours and has a lovely, relaxed atmosphere. It is an opportunity to catch up with old friends, rub shoulders with the artists, sample the wide variety food and of course browse the colourful clothing, craft and music stalls. No doubt the town itself – a bustling array of colour and movement with the dance sides – will get a visit too.

We are looking forward in August to Moira Furnace and Shrewsbury festivals as well. Here is an interesting contrast: the former small, compact yet personal and the latter bustling and packed with the major acts.

Closer to home, on Thursday night the folk-rock group Hunter Muskett are the guests at the Last Thursday Acoustic Club at Arts Coritani, Swineshead (8pm) also with performers from the floor.

On Sunday (11am until late), there is the 600 Whiskies Day of Lincolnshire Folk at the George Hotel, Leadenham. Admission is free and there will be a host of Lincolnshire folk performers including Spalding’s own Angela King and Paul Dickinson plus Bill Whaley and Dave Fletcher, Between the Lines and Winter Wilson.

Next Wednesday, Spalding Folk Club’s guests at the South Holland Centre Lounge Bar (8.15pm), as mentioned previously, will be Artisan.

Boston Folk Club at the Eagle, Boston, has a singaround on Monday, August 10 (8.15pm).
