FOCUS ON FITNESS: Important to look after yourself

Sometimes, putting ourselves first has to become a priority, otherwise I feel that we tend to get a bit lost in life.

I would say that I had become a huge people pleaser, chasing around in every direction.

Then the depression hit, plus on top of that I was seriously damaging my health by being hugely overweight... add that all together and it’s a pretty bad combination.

Which is why making that first step towards something may be a little unnerving but is equally important for your own sake. And for your own life.

This month I have been at the gym and on the process of change for three years! It’s been hard work both mentally and physically but it has got me to where I am now...so I wouldn’t have it any other way!

I’ve lost 57cm (22in) from my waist, 8cm (3in) from my arms... among quite a few other different changes.

To some people a gym is just a gym, but I disagree on a massive level and it’s something that I feel very passionate about.

One of my favourite quotes is: “Take care of your body as it’s the only place that you have to live”. That includes our mental health as much as our physical. As without it, we truly have nothing.

The gym is a community, a place where we set and achieve goals, make friends and develop as people.

Putting yourself out there makes you grow as a person and without me hitting the gym and pushing myself out of my comfort zone it could have been a very different story.

As we face a second lockdown, I urge you to keep moving and be as active as you possibly can. Maybe take up an online fitness class or even just go for a walk. Physically it does us good to keep moving but right now I think we need it more mentally.

My plan it to keep going and to stay as active as I possibly can. I’m also going to use this time to try to shed half a stone before Christmas.

So making sure that I plan my meals and really focus on what I’m putting into my body. As it’s true what they say: “We are what we eat.” And if I eat too much rubbish I’ll feel exactly that. So for me I’m going to try and use this time wisely.
