FOCUS ON FITNESS: Making the first move…
No I don’t mean after you’ve downloaded the recent dating app... I mean that first step back into fitness. You’ve been putting it off all year, it was too hot. I mean, yes, it was one heck of a long heatwave...
Now it’s too cold... and the dark nights don’t help. It’s nearly Christmas so what’s the point? Yes I get that it’s difficult.
I know the feeling of walking into a new gym can be scary as I did just that this time last year. I wasn’t feeling at my best and I was very overweight, uncomfortably actually. But it’s one of the best decisions I’ve made in a while. It’s just making that initial first step - after that you’re soon not the newbie any ore and are welcomed into the crew.
Studies show that us Brits are more stressed, not good at sleeping and are getting bigger on a yearly average. You only get one body - which we have to look after just as we do our cars or our homes.
For me weight gain is relatively easy and if I don’t keep my eye on the ball and hit the gym I can soon fall off the wagon. It also makes me feel good once those endorphins hit the system... win, win.
Now for me I haven’t got the motivation to do a home workout DVD. I have a stack that are collecting dust. My thing is the gym as I love meeting new people, making friends and smashing goals where possible. Also there is always someone on hand to push you if needed.
If you haven’t been in a gym for a while they usually do different schemes so effectively “try before you buy”. You can try out the gym I go to with a three-day pass if you know a member. So look around at all the local gyms and see what they have to offer. Or most offer a day pass.
I understand, I really do, that it’s also down to money and finding time but an hour in the gym is a small percentage of your day... something you could maybe achieve once or twice a week, and in a month how much do you spend on rubbish food? That is making you feel exactly that. I’m sure if you add it up you soon get near to spending £20 on cakes, crisps, doughnuts, drinks out, chocolate bars etc etc.
I’m not saying that you have to cut all of that out of your diet but you do only have the one body and sometimes we have to make a choice and lead by example. What is more important... as without your health what do you have?
So if you’re thinking of getting back into fitness why don’t you give it a try now? Before the mad rush in January. There is actually a lot of choice around here in our area with fitness classes, gyms, football, boxing, netball and running clubs, if the gym isn’t your thing.
I know myself when I was at my biggest I wasn’t happy or healthy and it really takes its toll on your confidence. But we all have the power and drive to take back that control... set some goals and smash them. You are important... and we all matter.
