Coronavirus: South Holland, The Deepings and Bourne get doorstep flower deliveries on Mother's Day

Around 3,500 bouquets of flowers were delivered to doorsteps in South Holland, The Deepings and Bourne on Mother’s Day.

Spalding St Paul’s ward councillor Rob Gibson, who works for the homeless charity Framework, was offered 20 pallets of flowers by Green Partners of Moulton through the agency, Neighbourly.

An appeal on Facebook on Saturday saw around 50 volunteers step forward to deliver the flowers ... and Rob’s home phone was so red hot with calls he had to turn it off at 1am.

The flowers went to hospitals, including bouquets for nurses at Spalding’s Johnson Community Hospital, care homes, pensioner bungalows and a host of other paces.

Rob dubbed the volunteers “an army of hope”, and says it took around four hours to deliver the whole lot.

He said: “Volunteers came and collected them from my house to deliver to doorsteps.

“We tried to keep everybody separate - they came a few at a time - to limit social contact.

“We were leaving them on the doorsteps - it was knock and leave so we kept the social distancing.

“Everybody was using the hand sanitiser and trying to stay as safe as possible.

“A couple of people we spoke to were in tears because they are so isolated at the moment.

“People are calling it a random act of kindness.”

Some grateful recipients opened the door, found the flowers and then called up the street to thank the volunteers.

Writing on Facebook yesterday, Rob said: “The power of Social media: normally you can find negativity, anger or dismay.

“Today I found hope. An army of hope in fact.

“Yesterday I took a fantastic delivery of 20 pallets, 3500 bunches, of flowers, donated by Green Partners of Moulton.

“I asked for help last night and today I received it. So many volunteers that it only took four hours to deliver 3,500 bunches.

“Thank you all so much for your help, you have brightened up Mother’s Day for so many people, the elderly, the isolated, the nurses, the care workers and the mothers.

“Massive shout to Green Partners for the donation, fantastic gesture that I can assure you has reached nearly every care home in this area, the hospitals, the elderly and the isolated.

“Thank you all.”

Fellow district councillor Angela Newton and a friend delivered to Leiden Fields and parts of Spalding West.

Angela said: “Well done Rob. Brilliant effort.”
