FLEET balloonist Adrian Waters led the way as 50 hot air balloons flew into the record books in a mass crossing of the English Channel on Thursday.

Mr Waters (53) made the crossing in 50 minutes with fellow pilot pal Gary Davies.

The pair were in the second balloon to start with but led after another pulled out over the cliffs at Dover.

Mr Waters said: “It was registered with Guinness who actually confirmed it was a world record and we achieved it. As soon as we got to Dover we could see Calais on the other side. It was a little bit hazy at 1,500ft but below that it was very clear.”

Mr Waters, a window fitter, has been ballooning for eight years and became a pilot just over three years ago.
