Five sons and one grandson of Mr and Mrs W A Thorpe, of Gedney Road, Long Sutton, were all serving in the Army in 1916.
Their photographs appeared in these newspapers. They were (top row, from left) Pte Mackenzie with the Royal Engineers in France; Pte Adolphus Thorpe, driver in the Motor Ambulance in France; Pte Bendigo Thorpe, 3/5th Leicesters; bottom row – Pte Emperor Thorpe and Pte Elias Thorpe, 3rd Suffolks.
The last man, Mr and Mrs Thorpe’s grandson, was Pte Ambrose Thorpe, of the Suffolks, who had been wounded in France and had since gone back to the trenches again.
The first five were brothers of Mr Mark Thorpe, of the White Lion, Spalding, and Ambrose was his nephew.
