FIREFIGHTERS who responded to five haystack fires on the same night said it could have tied up emergency resources needed elsewhere.

Crews were called out to arson attacks at Swineshead, Algarkirk, Sutterton and Kirton Marsh between 8.55pm and 2.20am overnight on Thursday.

Steve Wright, arson task force manager, said: “Fortunately, our firefighters were able to respond to each of these incidents and get them under control. However, this did unnecessarily tie up resources that could very easily have been needed elsewhere.”

A fifth stack fire – although not believed to be related – also happened on Thorney Road in Crowland. It had been put out by the time firefighters arrived.
