The Starbucks branch at Springfields in Spalding closed its doors on Sunday - and the shop's first ever customer returned to bid it farewell.

Simon M Lewis was the first person through the doors five years ago when the branch first opened and said he felt 'obliged' to be there on its final day at the weekend.

Mr Lewis, who runs Spalding-based business 79DESIGN, is a Starbucks fan - having first encountered the chain when visiting California.

He said: "I was extremely excited to see them coming to Springfields, as it was the first Starbucks in the area for miles around, so I really wanted to be there at launch.

"I was given a gift bag, including one of those refill cups, which I still use. And in fact, sad as it sounds, I kept the paper cup that they were serving at the time, and dated stamped it. It’s on a shelf at home."

He added: "The day I recall them being as busy as ever, was when Peter Andre was turning on the Christmas lights one year. It was rammed.

"I remember many staff that have been there over the time – such as Eva, Nikki, Becky and numerous others. Some saw me and would just turn on the Filter for. Others would see me and bring the coffee over to me, if I was sitting down somewhere. It was such good service."

Having built up a rapport with the staff over the years, he said he was sad to see the store go.

Staff last week said farewell to customers with a post on their Instagram page.

We approached Starbucks for comment on why the store has closed and Springfields to ask if there are plans for a new store in Starbucks' place.

A spokesman for the shopping outlet said they could not yet confirm who will be taking up the unit.

Since the Springfields store opened, the coffee chain has opened drive thru outlets in Sutterton, Long Sutton and Pinchbeck.

Yesterday we also revealed that there are plans to open a branch in Bourne.
