Star Wars and Harry Potter star Warwick Davis guests at Nacro Education Spalding graduation event
Students in Spalding have been urged to “always follow your dreams” at their start-studded graduation in the town.
Star Wars and Harry Potter film actor Warwick Davis and his wife Samantha were the special guests of Nacro Education Spalding where a group of 16-19-year-old students were rewarded for completing their courses over the past year.
About 35 students were presented with certificates for courses in English, Maths, Child Care and Retail in front of parents, carers and tutors by Warwick in his role as the Nacro centre’s ambassador.
It was Warwick and Samantha’s second visit to Nacro Education Spalding this year, having spent a day in January at the centre where teenagers outside of mainstream post-16 education can take both academic and vocational qualifications.
Warwick said: “I came here earlier this year to see the college and I had a lovely time.
“So it’s been great to come back and say congratulations to the students on being part of the courses they’ve done.
“In fact, they have achieved two things in being part of their courses and then to be presented with their certificates for completing them.”
Megan Davies, child care tutor at the Nacro centre, said: “Warwick very kindly decided to come to the graduation event for our learners, celebrating with them their achievements over the year.
“We had 35 learners who worked towards qualifications in Child Care, Retail, GCSE Maths and English.
“A lot of our learners tried to go through mainstream college but weren’t able to, so this is a real celebration for them.”
Following the presentation of certificates, Warwick told the students: “I’m sure you all have dreams and ambitions that you want to achieve.
“In my case, I had to fight a little bit harder to achieve what I did and make my way in the world.
“You develop a little more tenacity and determination which will really stand you in good stead for later life.”
Following a national Ofsted inspection in March, Nacro Education was judged good in all areas, with leaders, managers and staff praised for having “high ambitions for learners that help them make good progress, achieve well and take positive next steps in their education and employment”.
Zoe Whitmore, senior tutor at Nacro Education Spalding, said: “At our centre, young people and adults can choose from a wide range of learning opportunities to give them the skills they need to get on the path to their chosen career.
“We also work closely with local employers and businesses to offer the best work experience and progression opportunities into further education or employment for our students.
“At Nacro Education Spalding, the sky really is the limit and we would encourage more local people looking to progress their education to come and find out what makes us so special.”
Before leaving the graduation event, Warwick said: “Always follow your dreams and hopes, go after them with every ounce of your determination and you will succeed."
"You're the only ones who have the ideas to do it because whilst your tutors and course leaders will be able to help you, you're the only ones who can take advantage of that."
