Fake debt help warning

Have your say

IMPOSTERS claiming to be from South Holland Citizens Advice Bureau are preying on people with money worries by cold-calling them offering fake debt help.

The scam came to light when a member of the public called the CAB asking how they knew he was in debt after he had received a call from someone claiming to be a CAB adviser.

Manager of South Holland CAB Diane Clay has said everyone should be on their guard.

She said: “This is a despicable scam that trades on public trust in our service.

“We were horrified when someone who wasn’t an existing client contacted us to find out how we knew they were in debt and told us they had received a call from one of our advisers.

“We made it very clear that no CAB adviser, or anyone connected with the CAB, could ever phone or text someone out of the blue to offer debt management services.

“We really cannot stress this too strongly and we would urge anyone getting a bogus call like this to end it as quickly as possible and never confirm or give out any personal information.”

Mrs Clay said all such calls should be reported immediately to Action Fraud 0300 123 2040 and to the CAB.
