Long Sutton church to host spectacular light display
A spectacular light display on a Long Sutton church will be sharing messages of thanks and hope.
St Mary’s Church will be the canvas for the Light Up Long Sutton project which will be taking place between Friday and Sunday, December 18 and 20.
Fr Jonathan Sibley along with South Holland district councillor Andrew Tennant and Popcorn Media have worked together on this project which will include messages from the community and children from Long Sutton Primary School.
Initially the light display was planned as one of the events in a year-long celebration to mark the 850th anniversary of St Mary’s Church. While many events were forced to be cancelled, this idea has been adapted.
Fr Jonathan said: “Long Sutton is losing its community events this Christmas so this is a good way of celebrating Christmas and bringing the community together in a different way.”
In recent weeks, the team have been asking for people to send in their thanks and messages which will be projected onto the church between 4pm and 10pm each night.
These messages have ranged from thanks to the NHS and community supporters along with individual messages to people who have helped their neighbours.
Templates of baubles were also sent to Long Sutton Primary School for youngsters to create their own. These designs will also be transmitted onto the church.
Coun Tennant said: “The idea is to have the church lit up and some elements of the church yard to create a spectacular display. There will not be any of the usual services this year, so we are going to light up the inside of the church so the stained windows will be really dramatic.
“I am looking forward to seeing it as it is going to be really exciting. It is not going to be an event which will encourage people to gather.
