Deepings Raft Race is cancelled for a second time because of the coronavirus pandemic
A major community fundraising event has been cancelled for the second year running.
Organisers of the Deepings Raft Race have confirmed that this year's event will not take place because of the coronavirus pandemic.
They hope to return in August 2022.
Committee chairman Andy Pelling said: "We reviewed the latest government advice on events and had to come to the difficult decision that we would not be able to comply with it.
"We have to take the responsible approach and put the safety of people first."
The race usually takes place on the August bank holiday weekend.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson intends for all coronavrius restrictions to be lifted by June 21, but the committee did not feel confident enough to go ahead.
Andy explained there would be no way for organisers to mange numbers or enforce social distancing if it is still required.
He added: "We realise this will be a great disappointment to our rafters, spectators, sponsors and especially the charities for whom we raise much-needed funds.
"We will be looking to see if there is some safe alternative activity we could operate to support some of those good causes."
