In the middle of August, all involved in the local arable industry are working flat out to ensure the harvest is brought in and it can sometimes be understandably difficult to think about matters outside the job in hand, writes Andrew Cross, NFU group secretary.
The crisis in the dairy sector, however, will not have escaped anyone’s attention and it is with no small amount of pride that I look at the work that we at the NFU are putting in to supporting our colleagues who are enduring massive pressure.
This pressure is being brought to bear across all sectors with rising supply being faced with decreasing demand. At times like this it becomes all the more important to support the British farming industry and I would urge you all to show your support for the NFU ‘Back British Farming’ campaign by visiting the NFU Online website and following the link or simply by ensuring that wherever possible you buy British produce.
The farming sector, both locally and at national level, should be recognised not just as producers of quality food, but also for the value added to the economy, employment and our beautiful and diverse countryside. Add to this the importance to the local economy of the associated industries of food manufacturing and transport and you quickly see just how crucial support for the sector is.
Locally, the NFU South Holland branch will be showing our support at the Spalding Food Festival on Sunday, August 30 at the South Holland District Council offices, Priory Road, Spalding PE11 2XE. We hope you will be able to join us there.
