Residents in Bourne are being warned to keep their windows shut as firefighters work to finally extinguish a fire in a scrapyard that started three weeks ago.

Firefighters from across the county tackled the major blaze at BW Riddle in South Fen Road on Friday, September 14, when smoke from between 800 and 1,000 tonnes of scrap metal and plastic could be seen from miles around.

A spokesman from Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue said: “The ongoing incident has reached a point that after consultations between the BW Riddle, the fire service, the Environment Agency and the company’s health and safety advisors, an agreement has been reached to fully extinguish the fire.”

Work is expected to take place over the next few days, causing an increased amount of smoke in the vicinity.
