Deeping St Nicholas woman traces her brave dad's wartime steps

More news, no ads

A daring escape from a moving train bound for a German stalag before spending two years on the run in Occupied Italy sounds like the plot for a movie but this was the real life war story of Lance Bombardier Bernard Burles.

Years later, his daughter Jane Davis, of Deeping St Nicholas, traced some of the footsteps of her father to find the places where he had hidden before peace was declared and he could finally go home.

Sadly Bernard had died in 2000 and, after retiring, Jane had set out to learn more about her father’s adventures and the people who helped him.
