A Long Sutton college student ceived a surprise award in house assembley after helping design a new sports mascot for Lincolnshire.

Thelma Ventura (14) was runner-up in the Lincolnshire Sport Mascot competition and received her certificate in front of fellow Bronte house students at the Peele Community College on Friday morning.

Lincolnshire Sport received over 350 entries from schools across the county – four designs were shortlisted, one was chosen as the winner and then aspects from the other three were added to create Mascot Max.

The aspects chosen from Thelma’s design were the Lincolnshire Sports Logo, headband, coloured wristbands and the shorts.

The College also received a plaque from Lincolnshire Sport which will be displayed in the College and a £100 sports equipment voucher.

The Year 9 student said: “I was very surprised in the assembly today to be given the certificate.

“I heard about the competition through my art teacher Mr Reynolds and decided to go home and enter.

“I have always enjoyed art and designing things so decided to have a go. I will also enjoy going to the cinema with my friend.”
