“Reach for the stars – it’s closer than you think.”

Pupils at Pinchbeck East Primary School are always encouraged to aim high – but last week they were shown the rewards when Olympic swimmer Sophie Allen spent the whole five days with them.

Sophie (22) – who trained at the South Lincs Competitive Swimming Club in Spalding, swam at the 2012 summer Olympics in the 200m individual medley and won a silver medal in that same event during the 2012 European Aquatics Championships – took an assembly at the school, went swimming with pupils, worked with after-school clubs, judged competitions and presented certificates.

She also took her medals along for the pupils to see – and they showed her their swimming certificates.

Head of school Teeny Vayro said: “It’s been an amazing week. Sophie wore her Team GB tracksuit for the assembly and said there is no feeling like going out to compete and having 17,000 people cheering you on.

“She was an inspiration to pupils and adults alike.

“Sophie told the children to set their heart and mind at something and work to achieve it – to find something they enjoy and build on it.

”It means so much more when someone has local connections.”
