Thug who headbutted policeman after Donington robbery is jailed




A thug who headbutted a police officer whilst being arrested for a robbery in Donington has been jailed for a total of 32 months.

Benjamin Lovell (27), of Market Place, Donington, split the policeman's lip open during the attack which came after he had stolen two packets of cigarettes from the village's Bargain Booze store in High Street.

Lovell was sentenced to four months' imprisonment for assaulting a police officer during a hearing at Lincoln Crown Court on Tuesday.

He was also told to spend an additional 28 months behind bars for the robbery at Bargain Booze which took place at about 7pm on Sunday, April 22.

On the night in question, Lovell walked into the store and took the cigarettes before walking out, with no intention of paying.

On the night in question, Lovell walked into the store and took the cigarettes before walking out, with no intention of paying.

When he was challenged by a member of store staff, Lovell showed them a knife and then left.

Lovell was later arrested at about 11.50pm the same evening on suspicion of robbery during which the arresting police officer was headbutted and spat at.

As well as robbery and assault, Lovell was also sentenced for possessing a knife in a public place.

In addition to the jail term, Lovell was told to pay total costs of £170 and an order was made for the seizing and destruction of the knife.
