‘It’s heartbreaking when you’ve saved your pocket money for what you want’

Bourne Wheelers Mark Botteley and his children Sian (18) and Adam (15) has planned to compete in both Manchester and York on Friday and Saturday after spending weeks training.

Mark said: “Adam and I were competing in the Manchester Regional Track League on Friday night and we took our bikes off the back of the car, leaving three road bikes locked to the vehicle in the car park.

“When we came out about 10pm, two of them had been stolen.

“Adam had only had his bike a week – it was worth about £1,700 but, more than that, it’s heartbreaking when you’ve saved up your pocket money to get what you want and then it’s gone.

“It would be hard to put a price on Sian’s bicycle because it has had a lot of upgrades – but it must be worth about £2,000.

“We race all over the country and this is the first time anything like this has happened.

“I don’t know why only two bikes were taken – maybe there was just two of them or maybe they were disturbed, but it was the first races of the year and ruined the weekend.”

Sian and Adam were
due to compete at the York
Circuit Races on Saturday,
but they didn’t let the theft blow stop them from carrying on.

Mark said: “They managed to race but didn’t do as well as hoped because they were not on their own bikes and their minds were on other things.

“Sian is a team rider for Velosure Starley Primal and they told us about a bike they could lend her at Altrincham. It was really nice of them but it was a three-hour round trip and it wasn’t race ready. At least she’ll have one for next week.

“Adam used mine, but it had not been not set up for him.”

All was not lost, though, with Mark coming third in his two races and Adam getting two 5ths and a 6th in his.

Sian and Adam are back competing this weekend at another early season race at Milton Keynes. Mark said: “Adam will using the bike he used last year, which isn’t ideal, but the main season doesn’t start until May, by which time we hope we’ll be sorted.

“Sian’s next big race is in Belgium at the end of the month.”
