The elderly driver who caused the death of a Spalding born mum of two, Sally Preece, has escaped jail because of his age.
Sally (49) was on a charity cycle ride from Land’s End to John O’Groats when driver Kenneth McClelland (77) overtook without making proper checks and hit Sally, who was riding from the opposite way.
McClelland, from Largs, Ayrshire, admitted causing her death by careless driving. At the sentencing hearing, Sheriff William Gilchrist said given McClelland’s age, he didn’t think it appropriate to impose a short period of custody.
He ordered the pensioner to do 300 hours unpaid work, banned him from driving for five years and told him he must resit his test before ever driving again.
The crash happened on the A85 near Killin, Stirling, in September 2014.
Sally was the daughter of Judy and Terry Wing, of Spalding, and made frequent visits to her home town from Cheltenham, where she lived with her husband Philip and their two children.
