Gambler caught shoplifting

UNLUCKY gambler Michael Chappell put a week’s money on a horse and lost the lot.

But he was just as unlucky when he realised he needed food because he was caught on CCTV as he stole from the same shop four times in seven days.

Three thefts were committed with other people and one on his own.

Rebecca Ritson, prosecuting, said Chappell was arrested after a police community support officer recognised him on CCTV pictures.

Chappell (29), of Withington Street, Sutton Bridge, pleaded guilty to four thefts of food from Budgens in Holbeach between January 25-31.

He was sentenced to a year-long conditional discharge and ordered to pay £50 compensation to Budgens and £50 court costs when he appeared before Spalding magistrates on Thursday.
